Al Sharpton(abridges from www.time.com) www.sharpton2004.com Foreign Policy & Defense Sharpton opposes international engagements such as Iraq, and would bring in the United Nations to help with rebuilding. He wants to build "real relationships" with Middle Eastern nations and wants an increased focus on relations with African and Caribbean nations. And he wants to trim waste from the Pentagon budget. Health Care Sharpton supports a constitutional amendment proposed by Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. establishing the right of every American to high-quality health care of equal standard. If such an amendment were passed and Congress failed to create a system guaranteeing equal, quality health care for all, Sharpton argues, he could take legal action. He supports a national, government-funded system, but has not provided details. Fiscal Policy, Economy, Labor and Agriculture Sharpton would repeal the Bush tax cuts and use the money to bring down the deficit. He also proposes a $250 billion infrastructure investment program to get the economy moving again. Social Security Sharpton does not want to reform Social Security, and insists that economic growth and fiscal responsibility will keep it solvent. Education Sharpton supports a constitutional amendment proposed by Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. establishing the right of every American to high quality public education of equal standard. If such an amendment were passed, Sharpton argues, and Congress failed to create a system guaranteeing equal, quality public education for all, a new civil rights movement could take legal action to force such change. Courts and Civil Liberties Sharpton supports a constitutional amendment proposed by Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. establishing uniform voting standards to prevent a recurrence of the debacle in Florida in 2000. He supports affirmative action and wants to end the ban on gays serving openly in the military. He also supports marriage and adoption rights for homosexuals. Sharpton is pro-choice, opposes the death penalty and wants to license and register hand guns. He wants to give D.C. either its own congressman or make it a state. Environment and Energy Sharpton wants to raise the fuel efficiency standards to 45 miles per gallon, and encourage alternatives such as hybrid and electric cars. He wants to put a cap on carbon dioxide emissions, and has taken no position as yet on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Homeland Security & Immigration Sharpton opposes the Patriot Act and wants it repealed or reformed. He also calls for reforms in immigration law, calling them discriminatory. |
