LIEBERMAN ON THE ISSUES

Iraq: "I know there is plenty of debate in America today about whether we were right to go there in the first place. That's healthy and important. I happen to believe, strongly, that we were right to use force when we did. But whatever our position on the war, we should unite on one thing as Americans. We should unite to support our troops as they continue to work for a safer, freer Iraq. I hope we can build alliances in the world to help us in this cause, so that we do the job we need to do and bring our men and women in uniform home to their families."

Immigration: "When I am President, I will put constitutional due process into our immigration laws. I will ensure that any immigrant who is arrested will be notified of their charges in a timely fashion. I will demand that their conditions of confinement are humane. I will make sure that families can locate their loved ones, and lawyers can defend their clients in detention. And when I am President, it will be crystal clear to our law enforcement community that no one should be stopped just because of their race or ethnicity."

Taxes: "Under the Lieberman Tax Fairness Plan, approximately 98% of all taxpayers will get a tax cut. My plan is simple. I lower the tax burden for middle-class families and ask those who can afford it to pay more of their fair share. I do so by condensing the six income tax brackets we have now into five, lowering taxes for almost every taxpayer, and raising them for couples making more than $200,000 a year."

Abortion Bill: "Today, the President signs into law a bill that lets the political agenda of right-wing Republicans override the rights and health of American women. This bill broadly threatens the right to choose. It utterly disregards the safety and wellbeing of the mother. And the Supreme Court has already ruled a similar law unconstitutional. When I am President, I will do all I can to undo this bill-and make abortion safe, legal, and rare."

Economy: "For me it begins with taking back the Bush tax cuts for the highest income Americans and redirecting that money to tax cuts that will reward business for investing and creating jobs. The money will also be used to invest in innovation, education, and job training, which are the keys to future economic growth. Like President Clinton I support trade as a way to open up markets around the world for products made in America but unlike president Bush I will fight hard against other countries that are not playing by the rules of international trade. And I will create a pro-manufacturing jobs program."
